Day 19

Another rough morning.
This one complete with "I don't like school" and
needing to somewhat force him to get on the bus.
He didn't get enough sleep,
and I know he was still tired.
I can't seem to convince him that he
needs to stay in bed at night
and allow his body time to fall asleep
instead of getting up repeatedly to play in his room.
{SIGH}

Also,
he lost his recess yesterday
for not completing an assignment.
Totally NOT ok with this.
I would much rather
he have homework when he gets home
than lose the only chance he has
to run off some energy during the day.
I'm curious to see how his day went today,
but it looks as though we may be having
another conversation with his teacher.
{BIGGER SIGH}

Ok... as a former kindergarten teacher I am heartbroken that this teacher is taking recess away, as an acting principal I am outraged. This is absolutely against every bit of research that supports developmentally appropriate education. This is absolutely NOT allowed in the building I am in for any elementary grade level. Children and adults need movement, fresh air, and a break. I admire you so much Kelly. Your alternative of bringing work home is a great one.
I wonder if there is some sort of transition every 20 minutes. That is a long time in kindergarten. Building stamina is actually a skill! Stations with open ended activities that last 10 minutes before rotating to a new one is certainly in the realm of reality at this age. Grayson is growing up but he has only been on this earth for 62 months and 4 days.

Yeah...that seems a little harsh for kindergarten.

Boo to using recess as a "privilege". I am happy to forward your Kindergarten teacher a list of developmentally appropriate consequences if you want. "Come on...lemme at 'er!" I can send it anonymously... LOLOL
